Homeschooling Help Needed.
plz?
I live in the Dallas TX area, and i have been looking up some homeschooling laws here in tx. I am 15 and currently in 9th grade. My dad said it was ok for me to get homeschooled by him just as long as i am well informed. Sooo, how/where can i get a curriculum with my grade level subjects? And is homeschooling difficult for a parent? Tell me about your experiences. I am just tired of public schools and their ghetto students who constantly disrupt class and PREVENT ME FROM LEARNING!!!!! thnx!
You can buy curriculum in a lot of different places. You can get it directly from publishers, or from companies who deal specifically with homeschoolers, or at bookstores online or brick-and-mortar bookstores, or thrift stores, or at homeschool support group curriculum sales, or eBay, or lots of other places.
Basically you’ll want to start by thinking of the sorts of books you want. Do you want standard textbooks? Or religiously-oriented ones? Or do you want to use more interesting books? (For example, there are a lot of history books out there that weren’t written as textbooks; they tend to be much more interesting to read with a lot more facts and details in them. And often they are available for free at a public library.) Do you want nice new textbooks? Or are used ones okay? (eBay or http://www.vegsource.com (see their homeschooling sections) or Amazon.com or BarnesandNoble.com all have used textbooks for sale.) If you want to buy brand new textbooks, you can go to specific publishers or to any large bookstore–if the bookstore doesn’t have them in stock, they’ll gladly order them for you.
If you really want to see a lot of textbook possibilities, you might look online for the homeschool conventions in your area. Often they are held in the Spring and lots of publishers come to them to try to sell their books. (If you can’t find out when there’s one near you, look on Yahoogroups for a homeschool support group near you. They’ll usually be able to give you a lot of information.)
If homeschooling difficult for a parent? Depends. Usually, most high school students can read well enough to be given some books and figure out much of it for themselves. Most homeschool parents of high schoolers just need to be available to answer questions on occasion. (Doesn’t mean that the parent needs to know all the answers, but they do need to be able to give some guidance on where the student can go to find the answers.) So, if the student is motivated enough and wants to learn, homeschooling isn’t that difficult. (It’s a different story, of course, if the student is a trouble maker…)
Personally, I’d suggest that you go on Yahoogroups and look for a local homeschool support group. They should be able to give you lots more information on how homeschooling works in Texas, local resources that are available, events in the area for homeschoolers, etc.
I’d also suggest, since you’re in high school, that you look for the book “And What About College? How homeschooling leads to admissions to the best colleges and universities” by Cafi Cohen. It has a lot of great information about the records you’ll want to keep (and other things) so that you can get into college later. That’s probably the sort of thing that your dad had in mind when he wanted you to be well informed.
Good luck.
